It’s fine to head to Hrísey for the painting residency!
Before we go we decide to take in a few more signs. We Do something very common in Iceland. Head to an outdoor swimming pool that is geothermal my heated!
In Iceland it’s not uncommon to take a soak before work.
We take in the 38 degree Celsius swim pool, the kiddo one which is a few degrees cooler than the rest.
Keep in mind it’s 48 degrees outside!!!
Jonah was hesitant at first, as he always is in water. But soon he was backflostimg and fluttering his legs, making my lifeguard heart big and proud!
The water is welcoming and warm, we can see why people do this everyday. Josh goes down the big blue water slide and Jonah is overjoyed shouting ‘boo slyyyde!’
Guess what, we tried puffin breast that night! Smoked and delicious, reminding me of pheasant my dad brings home in Minnesota. The sweet and bitter blueberry sauce is a great compliment to the Smokey bird. We wash it down with an Icelandic Gull beer.
It’s tine to move north. Jonah is clearly excited about packing.
Driving north on Route 1
We are heading 4 miles north to Akureyri where we will take off on a ferry to get to Hrísey.
Route 1 is beautiful, we head under the fjords water in a tunnel which we drive for 10 minutes, I don’t think I’ve ever been in an underground water tunnel!
Tundra, blowing rains, high winds, and coffee are favorites along the way. So many orange and yellow poppies and wild white yarrow line the roads.
We found an awesome playground 3 hours in where Jonah could play. Like any good road trip with a toddler he puked 2 hours into the trip, ooor dear. We will laugh about it someday I suppose…
We also found an epic swing Jonah and josh enjoyed. Jonah giggled with delight swinging with Dad. Islanders really know how to make a playground
We stop to eat some northern Icelandic whale and porkchops
Jonah really likes lamp chops!
We think whale tastes like beef really, it’s quite soft in the cucumber relish. This taster also included traditional Iceland sausage, puffin, cod, and other white fish. All with copious sheep cheese rede of course!
Jonah decided after a fully belly it was time to go shopping, they had the perfect cart his size.
We continue on the road. It’s getting sunny and beautiful as we head towards Akureyri!!!
The fjords are beautiful.
My cool hubs driving!
Well, here we are, the ferry at Hrísey about to board. Onto new adventures in life and art. Stay tuned for life on the island!
